Devon Music Education Hub (DMEH) is governed by a central board of members from a variety of organisations across Devon. Each member represents a different aspect of music education, and bi-monthly meetings are held to discuss policy, practice and developments in Devon which relate to the National Plan for Music Education. Ken began teaching in Devon in 1979 and held a number of leadership and management positions before becoming Head of Devon Youth Music in 1992. He directed Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra for more than 20 years and is currently Head of Devon LDP Music Service and Principal Adviser to the Devon Music Education Hub Board. Ken was a member of the National Music Programme Board until 2010, trained as a Music Service Evaluation Partner (MSEP) in 2011, was the South West Regional Convener for Music Mark – The UK Association for Music Education 2012 -2016 and is an Arts Mark Critical Friend. Ken is also the DMS Music Lead for schools in Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and the Teign Valley.


Major achievements include strategic leadership of music education in Devon, developing an inclusive vision for music education ‘This is our music’, introducing large-scale events such as the Mix, Music Comes to Town and leading the successful bid for Devon Music Education Hub in 2012, ensuring that professional expertise is maximised and strong links between teams, schools, regional and national partners are sustained.


Ken continues to perform professionally and has directed the premier South West Big Band AJ’s since 1997.

Jan Baker has been a head teacher in two schools in Devon for the last 20 years and is currently an executive head teacher within the Primary Academy Trust, which is an 8 school, Devon wide Multi Academy Trust.

Jan is music specialist as well as a Head Teacher and as such been involved with Devon Music Service and music leadership in all its guises and delivery over the last 20 years; she has supported and challenged at various committee levels always with the intention of securing the ‘best deal’ for the children and families in our Devon schools.  As an executive member of Devon Association of Primary Head Teachers Jan was enlisted onto the Hub board as the representative for the primary voice of schools.

Ian is a board member and treasurer of the Devon Association of Governors, through which he is representing Devon Governors on the Devon Education Music Hub. Ian also sits on the LA Schools Organisation and Admissions Committee.
 
For over 25 years Ian has been a member of Devon School governing bodies ranging from First, Middle and Combined Schools to Nursery/Pre-school, Primary and Secondary schools, in Exeter, covering maintained, federated and academy status. Ian has always had a passion for music and is currently a member of St Margaret’s Church Choir, Topsham.
